The Start-Up Draft will build the core of your team for years to come. Unlike a standard snake draft, an Auction format gives everyone the opportunity to bid on the players they really want. The amount you bid on players will become the amount they're under contract for, so good decisions here can set you up for long-term success (or failure).
The plan is to have a 1-day Auction Draft as soon as we can agree on a day that works for everyone. It would be great if everyone could attend in person, but that may not be possible with league members coming from NJ, CT, MA, and CA.
Draft will use the Auction Draft tool within the Sleeper app
Each team will enter the draft with an Auction Budget of $1,000 (the Salary Cap) and the winning bid $ amounts become each player’s salary
Technically the most you'll be able to bid on any single player is $973 since the app will make sure you have enough budget remaining to fill your entire roster
The remaining Auction Budget after the Auction becomes the Waiver Budget for each team
While teams can use their entire Auction Budget during the draft, they should plan to hold some back for Waiver claims and so that they can activate drafted Rookies from the Taxi Squad
If a team spends its entire Auction Budget, they will not be able to activate Rookies
The minimum Waiver bid is $0 so teams that have used their entire budget in the Auction can still claim players through Waivers
Rookie/Rookie Pick Inclusion:
We may or not be including rookies or 2024 Rookie Draft picks in the Auction
Unfortunately, all of the options around handling 2024 rookies have downsides so we will just hold a vote to decide which one to go with
The Draft will begin with a team nominating a player for all teams to bid on (nominating order will be randomized in advance)
Once a nomination is made, teams will have 1 minute to bid on the player
Bids made with less than 10 seconds remaining on the clock will reset the timer to 10 seconds
Once a player is won, the next team will nominate a player
Process will repeat until all teams are filled
After the Draft, teams will have some time to think about how long they want to keep their players at the salaries established in the Auction
Contract lengths for rostered players need to be submitted by the day of the Rookie Draft
For the inaugural season, teams that want to cut a player that they won in the auction can do so up to the day of the Rookie Draft and get a credit towards their Salary Cap
This rule will not apply to future seasons in the league: every year the new league season starts March 1 and a player needs to be cut before then to avoid being locked in at his full Salary for the upcoming year
